Image **UPDATED VERSION 1.0.4 RELEASED** 20080626
MySQL Savior will backup ALL of your databases, if its setup with the root mysql username and password it will catch any new databases you add without you having to change anything at all. This is a Linux Bash Script to automate your database backups.

Fixed two purely cosmetic bugs, set it up so the resulting backup file is now compressed and added a bit more documentation. We also now have a HOW-TO written explaining how to set it up for those who need it

To install this upload the file to your server and unzip it. The directions are in the README.TXT file.

Now the README.TXT file also explains how to setup ssh keys for those who need it. Mostly a cleanup release although the compression might solve some issues for some people who would time out or the file was to large to email.

We also added one new dependancy in resolving the one cosmetic bug, you need tree, tar, mutt and now sed installed for this to function. This release is a totally bug free release, even when run from the command line. Before some of the messages echoed back showed error for db named . did not exist and one other cosmetic error message. There now are no more errors. Although the two that did report before did not restrict functionality in any way. They just drove me nutz.

ImageOne of the best "KILLER APPS" that linux offers is Amarok, yet one of the first things i always install on every linux box i build (which is a lot) is Gkrellm. For those who do not know about it, wake the fuck up. Its a resource monitor and usually its your first indicator that something is going wrong, it can be configured to monitor TONS of stuff, but sadly there really has not been any theme development on it in YEARS, even the software is not actively being developed anymore but in reality that is cool cause its already perfect and it uses virtually zero system resources yet in realtime it shows you what is going on in your system. But its themes kind of suck, SO i made one that at least i think doesn't suck. You can download it here.

To install it just download it to your /home/$USERNAME/.gkrellm2/themes folder and run this command
tar -zxvf teknotuck.tar.gz then configure Gkrellm to show that theme. Enjoy!

How to recondition a keg.

ImageThis is specific to Cornelius Kegs. When buying a used soda keg and turning it into a beer keg you need to change out all of the gaskets so they do not throw off the taste of the beer (since they have had contact with soda).

My first time doing this forced me to find out how to get the darn thing apart, easier said than done.

Once i got it apart i was further stuck because i didn't know which rubber gaskets to change and which to not change, the kit came with 5 new o-rings but the keg itself had many more which left me scratching my head and hitting google to try to find the answer, after hours of searching and finding nothing but one drawing that looked like it had been faxed and copied hundreds of times i realized it might take a bit more work.

In all my keg had 8 gaskets. 5 get changed and 3 are apparently unique to my keg. So here is a bit of a How-To with good pics.

To Brew or not to Brew

ImageNot sure why geeks love beer so much but we do. For the last 10 years i have spent massive amounts of time at a small microbrewery (Buffalo Bills) near my home along with massive amounts of cash. Over the years i have become one of the regulars and slowly over time have gotten to know everyone who has worked there. As i have gotten to know everyone there they in turn have also gotten to know me. Needless to say i have fixed many PCs for several of the people working there both on the management and the regular workers there and of course this has translated over the years into getting special treatment from many of the people working there at every level.

I have also tried over the years to get wifi setup there but sadly the owner is frankly clueless as to why this would be in his best interest. Cluelessness also has allowed him to promote some complete losers to management and this has seriously hurt his business and from my and many of the other regulars point of view caused them to treat there regulars badly. Over y the last few months they have even fired some of there funnest employees for really bad reasons. Mostly i drank there because the beer has a fairly high alcohol content but sadly they also have terrible consistency. Sometimes the beer was good other times you could seriously taste the bleach used in sterilizing the equipment.

This has turned me from a once happy customer to a MUCH happier brewer. Sadly its been much easier than even i expected to brew beers much better than theirs and as i get better i bump up my production and recently i have graduated to from bottling to kegging. Since i have been using linux over the years i know the value of sharing information and with my first keg purchase i also managed to buy a cornelius keg that is non-standard in some fashion and in turning it from a soda key into a beer keg i found out how little good documentation there is (with pictures) of how you recondition a keg. In hours of searching all i found was one really REALLY bad drawing So here you have it, complete with great pictures here is how to recondition a keg.
