Backups on Acid
Saturday, 03 February 2007 23:18
Ok, sad part is the more i think about this, the more i know this is possible and i wander why it hasn't been done yet. Don't ask me how i came up with it though.

Imagine your backups being packaged as .rpm files or .debs or whatever your package manager for your distro is. Encrypt them so it requires your gpg key to actually be able to install something usable though if you really care about securing the data. If this is not the making of a brilliant company product, what is? Wow, Good beer huh! :-)

Seriously, same for windows. how about a program for users that they install and it goes and "finds your data" then it maps the directory structure and grabs it all and drops a .exe file on your desktop. you move it to the new system install it and bamm! there is all of your data. one package, sure its not going to setup outlook or import your mail? or is it? Linux easy, windows/outlook... not so much. It just uses a series of rsync scripts to constantly update the base of your source and bamm. instant carbon copy of your system. Is it brilliant? let me hear from you, what do you think?

Scary part is i have literally hundreds of ideas like this. Go ahead steal it. I know its a gem and we will both know where it came from idea wise. I'm cool with that.

CES, for the first and last time
Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:03
Well i have tried to make it to CES for quite a few years now and never made it. I now know what i have been missing, Its not CES. Yes lots of cool stuff, actually way to much. This event is HUGE, I have multiple blisters and even walking into the airport is going to suck but the best thing i saw was sick cars and incredibly large LCD/Plasma and Projection TV's.

Yes some crazy PC stuff, but this is not Comdex, that show died. this show just kills you. Assuming i ever do this show again i will spend much more time choosing some really really good walking shoes than anything else. Only Device i saw that was running linux was the Nokia N800, i loved the industrial design. It had a seriously sick popout camera and the form factor was very nice too. I did not see if it had IR, if it does, this would make the sickest home remote control system. I have to admit it was kind of a time warp effect that stopped me dead to hear the Term "Internet Appliance" again. I have posted the few pics i took up in the Gallery. I did see one thing there i would love to have, it was a 16 Gig USB drive that looks more like a Zippo lighter. Very cool.

Syncing a phone in Linux
Sunday, 19 November 2006 13:59
Well i have been looking at new phones and i trying out a RazrV3 from cingular for a week. Important for me is the ability to sync the thing in linux. While i could get the addressbook to sync and could access the filesystem on the phone with the tools you can download from my File Manager i was never able to get the calendar to sync, on top of that the phone had no volume. With that said - Goodbye Cingular. Ok, so its not as easy as i had hoped. So the lowest common denominator in terms of phones and the ability to sync up in linux is what is already supported.

Next choice up which i just got today is a Treo 700P, its 4 times as expensive but damn!! EVERYTHING WORKS!! Once i got kpilot to see my phone everything synced. I have now had the phone only a few hours and can already say this phone kicks ass. love it! Next up is to get the thing to sync with SugarCRM using Funambol. I have already spent a few days trying to get that setup since i new the phone was on its way. Not there yet but ill post up more info as i get it.
